The general ecosystem framework gradually took a back seat as I started exploring applied research, university patents, research (particularly, Australian Sciencein the public discourse and Technology research).
    The project
    so on.
But not to worry, the ecosystem principle makes an appearance (albeit it a modest one) when I discuss a sustainable framework for research. Ecosystem thinking for me is about finding meaningful solution to the paradox of wanting a self-organised system that is both resilient enough to withstand change and flexible enough to adapt to it. In research environment, just like in many others, this is not just an aim but a requirement for survival.
Due to work commitment, I had to put the dissertation on hold during 2010. I am now back working on it on a part time basis. It

    About the dissertation
I am currently writing my dissertation on data-intensive network tools to analyse the Australian
research (S&T)environment. My aim is an integral component of both national innovation systems and ofto understand in a general way how the Australian higher education environment carries out research. In Australia, S&T research is mainly conducted withinI spent a year or in partnership with publicly-funded universities. The S&T research agenda of Australian universities is set byso trying to figure out a framework to tie the prioritiesmany aspects of the Australian federal government research policy.
    While
together and I am leaning towards a complex systems approach.
    To demonstrate how
the Australian government has set high expectations for S&T research, there is some evidence that Australian S&T research is facing a number of challenges. Yet, there are fewnetwork tools today that can systematically assess the statusbe used, I look at several dimensions of Australian S&T research environment,(social networks, inter-disciplinarity, research funding, the extentcommercialisation of the challenges it faces, and the potentialresearch, social impact of changes to research policy.
This research project presents some such tools. In particular, the project performs three tasks: (a) it uses empirical evidence to paint
etc.) and analyse a whole-of Australian S&T research landscape, which will focus on the structural propertiesnumber of data sources (research publications, the environment (b) it identifies somestaff directory of various universities in Australia, the salient features of the Australian S&T research landscapepatent and interprets themplant breeders' rights database from a complex systems perspective (c)IPAustralia and it brings together and critically assesses policy recommendation for the future directionother sources).
    The final outcome
of Australian S&T research using a cohesive stewardship framework. The objective of this framework, the Australian Research Ecosystem, dissertation is (the grand vision of) an evidence-based framework for the long-term survival and competitivenesssustainable development of Australian S&T research.the research environment in Australia.
